Home Living : October 7 2008
8 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 7, 2008 Fixed up floors save lives Falls are a serious public health problem, causing about 1000 deaths a year HOMELIVING On an average day, three people over 65 die from falls and more than 1000 people a week are hospitalised. Archicentre said thousands of elderly people were living with dangerous slip and trip hazards around their homes, which could be fatal or result in serious injury. Among older Australians, falls are a serious public health problem, causing approximately 1000 deaths each year and a further 55,000 admissions to hospitals. Archicentre has called for a national awareness campaign to promote fall prevention among older people, to remove hazards and to make minor improvements to their homes. Archicentre training manager Ingrid Mountford says the falls issue needs to be given the same priority by government as other public health issues such as measures to lower the road toll or curb binge drinking. This would cut the demands on the health system and save lives. The 2008 survey of 37,000 homes inspected by Archicentre found 26 per cent had slip and trip hazards. The main causes of falls are slippery surfaces and uneven floors. But protruding door thresholds, loose rugs and carpet runners can also be hazardous, as well as tangled power and telephone cords. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the direct cost to the nation's health system to help people aged 65 recover from falls was $566 million.
