Home Living : October 7 2008
2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, October 7, 2008 Under-tile heat Prime the floor for wires. Lay the screed ready for tiling. About this time last year, one of my staff came up to me declaring that he had ''discovered a better mousetrap''. We have all heard the expression that if you can invent a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door, so I was interested. Then Darcy changed his description to, ''better than sliced bread''. The reason for all this excitement was under-tile heating. I explained this wasn't actually a new invention and it had been around for many years, but it was not widely understood. Undeterred, Darcy insisted it was revolutionary and we had to add it to our range of products. So, we did. I'm glad we did because we have all learnt a lot more about undertile heating and it is indeed, a better mousetrap. Under-tile heating has a number of genuine advantages over alternative heating in our homes. It can be installed in bathrooms, family rooms, bedrooms or any other area that we want to heat. It is asthma-friendly; it is maintenance- free; it is cheap to run; it is environmentally-friendly and it is totally safe. Under-tile heating is very simple. Special insulated wires are taped on the floor and the tiles are laid over the top. The wires are connected to a thermostat and timer and the job is done. No moving parts, nothing to break down, nothing to service, no vents, no flames. Set and forget. The amazing thing about under-tile heating is that it works on a simple concept. It is all done by radiant heat. If you have ever sat in a cold room during winter and felt the sun, beaming through a window on your face, then you have experienced radiant heat. The sunshine does not heat the air, it heats solid objects, like you. As these solid objects warm up, they radiate heat to other solid objects and so, the room feels warm and stays warm longer. Alternatively, airconditioning is exactly that, heating the air. This form of heating is called convection heating and causes currents in the air as warm air rises and cold air is forced downwards. These currents are why we feel draughts of cold air in airconditioned rooms. The currents also cause dust to circulate and this can cause havoc with anyone with breathing difficulties. Under-tile heating can be installed in zones so you only use it where you need it. Not only that, you can program under- tile heating to suit your lifestyle. In the bathroom it may come on 30 minutes before you get out of bed. The kitchen area may also be ready in the morning and then be programed to start up again 30 minutes before you get home from work. The average bathroom costs about 5c to 8c an hour to run. An average dining room may be about 24c an hour to run. It is silent, there are no odours or fumes, warm dry heat in the bathroom will keep mildew at bay, there is a 10-year guarantee. Most tile retailers can help with all the answers and a fact sheet on under-tile heating.
