FLEXO Magazine : September 2014
Stickpacks used for wet ingredients are typically film face/foil barrier structures. Stickpack equipment flows vertically, so the filling process places the weight of the ingredients on the freshly sealed bottom of the stick. Specialized sealants like metallocene and Surlyn work well in this type of application, as they seal quickly and at lower temperatures. This allows for improved efficiencies on the packaging equipment. The sealing process requires the right combination of heat, pres- sure and dwell time. The heat, for example, may reach 350 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pressure of 40 psi and a dwell time of 0.5 seconds. The heat and pressure are applied to the outside printed package, driving inwards to the sealant layer. The structures and the print/ processing applied to the outside surface must be built to withstand the packaging process. While standard rolls used for stickpacks and other types of flexible packaging are similar in appearance, there are structural differences that exist among the product families. These differences provide for optimal equipment performance and typical application needs. New film faced laminations and product enhancements, such as high and standard barrier multilayer snack webs, liquid fill products, easy open stickpacks and new packaging resins, continue to offer narrow web converters opportunities to expand their stickpack and other flexible packaging offerings. Special chemical resistance and stronger barrier protection now allow for narrow web growth in new market- places like industrial and automotive single use products.
