4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 14, 2008 ................................................ HOMELIVING Water wise The Dorf Oasis Vegie Spray (above left and right) combines contemporary design with the ultimate flexibility. A multi-function, pull-out handpiece offers the choice of two spray options at the push of a button -- an aerated stream or rain spray. With a 4-star WELS rating, the Oasis Vegie Spray has an easy- clean face designed to resist lime build-up. It is available in different designs to suit the user. For simplicity that stands out, Fowler introduces Seido Icon Suites. Designed in Australia, the latest additions to the Icon Collection, feature soft subdued styling and clean simple lines. Soft- close seats are included as standard. Available in either wall hung or wall faced styles, both options are designed to be water- efficient with a WELS 4-star rating. Switch off standby and save Home entertainment technology has certainly come a long way since the humble VCR hit homes in the 1970s. Today, a television, DVD, VCR and CD player may also be accompanied by a new hard-disk recorder, projector or set-top box, creating a modern home entertainment system. There also may be an extra DVD or VCR accompanying a second television in another room. EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors says when left on, all these appliances are quietly adding dollars to the electricity bill. ''Some older-model DVD players can use up to 20 watts when left on,'' he said. ''If left on everyday over a year, this adds about $25 to your energy bill and contributes around 190 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. ''A hard disk recorder uses up to 30 watts when left on and a set-top box can use around 15 watts. ''If you're in the habit of turning off just your television, and leaving the other appliances running all day, you may be unnecessarily pushing up your energy bills. The simple tip is to switch them off when you're not using them.'' Standby mode is when an appliance has been turned off by remote control but it can be reactivated at any time. The energy being consumed by appliances when in passive standby mode can also be significant. For example, stereo systems and set- top boxes can consume on average eight watts when in standby mode. So switch off when you've finished with your home entertainment to turn down your energy bills and your greenhouse gas emissions Details: Paul Myors is an energy efficiency expert for EnergyAustralia.
