Home Living : October 21 2008
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Your stamp on it Making a house warm and inviting can be as easy as picking the right combination of colours, textures and dressings. Here are interior design tips to help even the most inexperienced homeowner create the interior designs and finishes they've always desired. Brief yourself like a consultant Consider the look you want to create. Even though you are doing the design yourself, treat it is as if you were briefing a consultant to design it for you. Your home is a blank canvas Don't assume that what's there now is how it must be. Test colours. Once you have determined the underlying design, focus on smaller details. Bring the outdoors indoors Opening up curtains, blinds and windows can freshen a room, adding the warmth of sunlight or the theatre of winter storms. Plan the garden to complement it. Get a grip on colour Colours can be used to evoke a particular mood or affect the way we feel. When choosing colours, always buy several sample pots. Paint large patches on walls and inspect them at different times of the day and in different lighting conditions. Take your time and don't rush the selection. Make the most of lighting Don't be afraid to use a combination of lighting sources. Overhead or downlights, table and floor lamps and directional downlights are all creative options. Furniture selection Try to mix up your furniture. When choosing seating, combine different options such as a sofa, a couple of interesting side chairs, some beautiful floor cushions, or a funky beanbag. Be bold and brave to create a striking statement. It's not necessary to have everything matching. Placing the furniture Play around with different furniture configurations and positions. Break away from tradition. Set up your living area for conversation, not watching television. Triumph with textures Texture can add warmth, dimension, volume and strength to the look and feel that you are trying to create. A chunky rug or glamorous upholstery can draw attention to different parts of the room. Try to introduce some sparkle and shine. Mirrors or chandeliers work well. Art, odds and ends Think about the placement of art and design objects. A selection of one or two beautiful pieces, well positioned and lit, have more impact than five or six pictures hung randomly. A mixture of odds, ends and collectables can clutter and disrupt the free flow and feel of a room. Be inspired and inspire Magazines can provide inspiration and information on the latest trends. But remember, rules are meant to be broken -- you don't have to slavishly copy others. Be true to yourself, and have fun.
