Home Living : October 28th 2008
2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, October 28, 2008 Smart way to paint Painting is one of the most rewarding parts of renovating -- you get spectacular results quite quickly. But it can have its problems. Over the next couple of weeks we answer some of the most frequently asked questions: Painting over weatherboards We are about to paint our weatherboard house. Can we test if the existing paint is stuck firmly to the weatherboards? We want to make sure that there are no problems with peeling and flaking paint. Answer Painting over an existing painted surface can produce great results, if the existing paint is stuck firmly to the surface of the weatherboards. The stickiness of existing paint will need to be tested in several areas around the home. Using a sharp knife, cut a small cross on the existing painted surface and then press adhesive tape firmly across the middle of the cut. Press the tape on to the surface and rip the tape away quickly. Paint stuck firmly should not strip away with the tape. Otherwise, you'll need to remove the loose paint back to a firm clean base. Painting stained timber boards My house has stained timber skirting boards and architraves. Can I paint over these? Answer Yes you can, but be sure to sand the timber and make sure you remove all of the clear coating or varnish that may be on the timber. Wipe the timber down with mineral turpentine and allow the timber to dry before applying a base coat. You'll need to apply an oil-based pre-coat primer to the timber and allow this to dry thoroughly before undertaking any further works (check the manufacturers' instructions).
