from a graphic designer to an electronic pre-
press specialist, a management information
system administrator to a statistical process
control analyst, an imaging media specialist
right up through the prepress and design
coordinator or department manager. All hold
roles that are diverse and essential. Each July,
FLEXO salutes them, looks at their chal-
lenges, their talent and the latest tools and
techniques that, when utilized properly, allow
them to maintain design intent and chalk up
success a er success.
Premedia team member contributions to the
production of quality packaging that builds
a brand's image are vast. ey articulate
standards, match to proof and put forth a
clear picture of e ciency for all to appreciate.
ese are exo's beta testers, point people
and process owners. eir worlds are lled
with highlights, shadows, hues, angles. ey
maintain color libraries, capture spectral
data, become consumed with concerns like
dot areas and gray balance. ey build curves
and traps, and o er a frontline defense in the
battle to drive variables from the process.
To these masters of plug and play tech-
nologies and proponents of colorimetric
agreement, nothing is as important as the
seamless integration of collaborative architec-
ture. eir story unfolds in the pages of this
issue---the whos, hows and whys---beginning
with a list of FTA member companies who
carry the package from its earliest moment to
its point of sale on the store shelf.
At that moment, one mission is accomplished
and another begins. Look to the horizon:

Last month, her car started making some
ungodly sound---like running a steak knife
through a garbage disposal---and I brought
it back to Nolan's. Danny remembered me,
asked how she was doing, when we were
getting married and having kids. I told him to
"pump the brakes," a great joke at a mechan-
ic, and he couldn't stop laughing. While he
was looking under the car, his sta had pizza
delivered for lunch, and several employees
o ered me a slice (they ultimately made me
a fresh cup of co ee instead). A er replacing
the brake pads, he showed us the old ones
next to a good set, so we could see they were
in fact worn down to the metal.
Nolan's is my go to for any car problems now,
and the piece of mind that I "know a guy" I
can trust is invaluable.
I'm sure there are countless printers who
have gone through a similar experience
trying to nd a reliable prepress shop. e
guts of a printed package---the design---are in
that shop's hands, and if it does a bad job, all
the best inks and newest aniloxes won't mean
much. A shop that cuts corners or is just
looking to make a quick buck doesn't have its
priorities in order, and it doesn't have your
needs at the top of the list.
FTA's annual premedia locator guide high-
lights FTA member prepress shops, who,
as demonstrated by their a liation, are
concerned with more than just their bottom
line. ey want to foster a relationship, be
transparent and honest, and deliver a better
product or service. Any company you can
describe that way---auto shop, prepress shop
or other---is one I'd want to do business with.
