2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, November 4, 2008 Prep key to paint success Problem solving before you paint will reward you in the finish. Painting over stains How do I paint over the water stains on my walls and ceiling? Answer First you need to ensure that the source of the water stains has been correctly identified and rectified. If this is not resolved the water stains will eventually reappear. Once this has been resolved, you'll need to remove the loose paint back to a firm clean base. The surface will need to be washed down with sugar soap and left to dry. Sand and smoothe the damaged area, then apply an oil-based undercoat to seal the stained area. If required, lightly sand the area again before applying a topcoat. Exterior windows -- which paint? We are about to paint the outside of our timber windows. Should we use enamel or acrylic paint on the windows? Answer Normally, manufacturers suggest using acrylic paint rather than enamel paint on exterior timber windows -- in fact for most exterior uses. This is because acrylic paints have better UV protection and greater flexibility than enamels. This allows the windows to look better and remain relatively maintenance free for five to 10 years. Surface preparation is the key to a great finish and durability. Also remember to open and close the windows a few times during the first couple of weeks after painting. It'll help to stop the newly-painted surfaces sticking to each other.
