FLEXO Magazine : November 2008
FTA TODAY FTA Members Recognized at TLMI Awards Flexo in Front F rom amidst an assortment of more than 300 narrow-web print processes and applications, judges at the 2008 TLMI (Tag and Label Manufactures Institute) awards competition identified 77 worthy of medals. The winners were announced on Oct. 21 at the TLMI annual meeting in Palm Springs, FL. Thirty- four companies took honors. Among them, 17 were Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) members. Collectively, FTA members earned 38 awards. As affirmed at Labelexpo Americas 2008, flexography is a domi- nant force in North American label and narrow-web printing (see page 16 in this issue, or page 30 of FLEXO’s August edition). As such, it is little surprise that out of the total winners, nearly half— 37—were for jobs printed flexographically. The breakdown by rank was similar: 25 of 51 first-place awards were for flexo print- ing, as were 12 of 25 second place nods. This does not include the three awards (two first-place and one second-place) in which flex- ography was combined with two or more other print processes. FTA member McDowell Label, Plano, TX, a frequent winner at both TLMI and FTA’s Excellence in Flexography Awards, raked in 10 prizes—four first-place and six second place. This topped the winnings of any other entrant at the 2008 TLMI competition. At the 2008 Excellence Awards, McDowell pulled two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, but for different jobs. Label Technology Inc., Merced, CA, another FTA member and regular winner at both contests, earned three first-place and one second-place. Its Columbus Salame Specialty Series job earned a first-place from TLMI and a gold from FTA. Label Technology also earned the Best of Show in the mid-web category at this year’s Excellence Awards. Fellow FTA member G-3 Enterprises, 72 F LEXO Modesto, CA, took two first-place honors, only months after scor- ing one bronze and two gold Excellence Awards. Label World Inc. of Rochester, NY, also an FTA member, earned a first-place award, as well as the prestigious best of show. The job, Parkside Smoked Cheddar Sesame Crisps, was printed digi- tally (oh, well), a testament to the advancements in this printing process—as well as a warning to flexographers that competition with digital does exist (see FLEXO August, page 60). Other FTA members who received recognition include: Amherst Label Inc., Belmark Inc., Collotype Pty. Ltd., Corporate Express, Dow Industries, Metro Label Inc., Moore Wallace, MPI Label Systems of California, National Label Co., Prestige Label, TAPP Technologies Inc., WS Packaging Group, and York Label. ? FTA’s 2009 Excellence in Flexography Awards compe- tition is now open to submissions. This year’s judging will rate print samples in 11 categories—Wide Web, Mid Web, Narrow Web, Folding Carton, Napkin, Combined Corrugated, Preprinted Linerboard, Envelope, Newspaper, Student, and Self-Promotional.
