Home Living : November 18th 2008
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Glass is no longer a pane Use gloves to remove broken glass. Smooth the putty. Replacing broken glass in a window pane is relatively easy, but extreme care is needed to safeguard against injury and to make sure the job is completed correctly. Use a chisel to remove the old putty or beading from the window frame. Also remove all broken pieces of glass. Wear protective gloves. Use pliers to pull out the old glazing sprigs from the frame. Then measure the frame to work out the exact size of the new glass. Have the piece of glass cut 2mm-3mm smaller than the internal dimensions of the window frame to allow for expansion and contraction. You can do this yourself with a hand-held glass cutter. But because this can be dangerous, we recommend that you take the glass to a glazier or hardware shop and have it cut for you. Squeeze a thin layer of putty into the corners of the frame. Position the glass in the frame, pressing it firmly (but not too hard) into position. Tap in the new glazing sprigs every 200mm to 300mm to hold the glass in place. Add new putty around the edges of the glass. The putty should be smoothed so that it is neat, tidy and level. Trim excess putty around the edges and leave it to harden.
