HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS Kym Nelson has a sun-catching deck that is absolutely delightful during winter days however in summer it catches and holds the heat. Mrs Nelson is looking for something to shield the area from this oppressive heat. Would a folding-arm awning be suitable? Complete Blinds owners Marty Keeble and Troy Dipietro agree a folding-arm awning is the ideal solution. ''These are made for decks and entertaining where people don't want to close the area in completely but provide permanent shade during summer,'' Mr Keeble says. ''The awnings are extremely practical and able to be motorised to simplify operation by a hand-held remote control that can even be incorporated into the home's automation system, if desired. ''At the press of a button the awning will move up or down as required. There is also an adjustable tilt pitch that can be lowered or raised, this is ideal to avoid the setting sun.'' How do they look when not in use? There are three finishes. All fold flat against a wall however look slightly different when closed. Standard models close and can be seen. A hood can be provided to protect the fabric if required. Semi cassette styles allow only the arms to be seen. Full cassettes enclose the entire awning and arms folding neatly away in a powder-coated box. This protects the fabric for longer life. Are they sturdy? The awnings are designed to provide sun shade and should always be retracted in windy or wet conditions. They are maintenance-free due to the anti-corrosive and highly durable materials used. The aluminium arms are heavy-duty with built-in tensioning springs and the materials are available in plain, patterns and stripes. Fabrics include acrylic, fibreglass mesh, the waxed backed acrylic provides a level of water resistance. How much block-out can we expect? There are different degrees. The acrylic is a complete blockout while the mesh is available in 83 per cent and 92 per cent blockout. An obligation-free home consultation is recommended to ensure the best application for the area. Details: Complete Blinds, Unit 45/24-32 Lexington Drive, Bella Vista. Call 8824 7975.
