2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 Solar hot water ticks the boxes HOMELIVING Have you recently installed or are you thinking about installing a solar hot- water system? According to EnergyAustralia's energy efficient expert Paul Myors there are some simple tips to make your solar hot- water system work best for you. ''Solar hot water systems require some form of boosting, either electric or gas, for when the sun isn't shining,'' he said. ''So first consider the type of booster you are going to install. A gas booster is the best option for reducing your carbon emissions but gas can be more expensive to install and may not be available in your area. ''The more common option is an electrically boosted system. By making sure it's connected to an off-peak electricity tariff, you will still be paying lower rates for boosting your hot water.'' By installing water-efficient showerheads you'll reduce your overall hot water use and the amount of water to be boosted. The same goes for taking shorter showers and washing in cold water. The time of the day that you use hot water can also make a big difference. For example, if your family uses a lot of hot water in the evening the tank may run out of hot water before you go to bed. This means an electric-boosted system will replenish your hot water overnight, relying on electricity to heat the water for the next day. Timers or override switches can be used to manage electric boosters to ensure that you get the most from your solar hot-water system. Talk to your supplier about correct operation of timers and how to get the most from your solar hot-water system.
