Home Living : December 2nd 2008
HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 1 A new line on space Space-saving designs are all the go with modern clothes lines. A traditional hoist clothes line in the middle of the yard is no longer acceptable. Folding clothes lines are easy to install. They are designed to be attached to a structure capable of carrying the weight of the frame and wet clothes. The supporting brackets can be attached to brick walls. Weatherboard houses are not meant to carry loads. Studs should be located under the weatherboards and brackets attached to these, or use the ground conversion pole kit supplied with the clothes line. Start by determining how much line space you need. A guide is 10m per person, but consider how much space is available and how often you wash. Step 1 Measure the width available for the clothes line frame. For a custom fit, the bars can be cut to size. Also measure the height available. You should install the line about 50mm above the head height of the person who will usually use it. Step 2 If not attaching the line to the exterior of the house, dig holes for the posts and concrete them in. Attach the brackets. Wait until the concrete has set before doing any further work. Step 3 If attaching the line to the house, DynaBolt brackets to the wall or fix the rear crossbar in place. Step 4 Cut the crossbars to length. Step 5 Attach crossbars to the extendable arms. (If you are installing a line with a smaller fixed section and a bigger fold-down section, you will need to fit the internal horizontal bars first, then the external horizontal bars.) Step 6 Fix the brackets to the wall or to the support poles. Step 7 Attach the corner threads to the clothes line. Step 8 Feed the line into the fixed hanging section and the fold-down section. Tie off at beginning and end. Details: www.renobrothers.com.au HOMELIVING Water wise The Australian-designed Hughie Sink helps solve water-saving problems around the home. Simply place the Hughie in your kitchen, laundry or bathroom sink and let it fill with grey water. Insert the pourer and you will be able to release water in a regulated manner to water plants. This device enables 80 per cent of wasted grey water to be used to rehydrate your garden. Available at Bunnings. Water-saving shower heads continue to increase in popularity. About one-third of Australians used them in 2006, and this has jumped to 69 per cent in 2008 says a Bunnings Warehouse representative. Other water-saving devices show little increase in sales. Miele dishwashers are four- star WELS rated, ensuring washing efficiency and water savings.
