INDUSTRY INDICATORS MAI Acquires Rotoflex International Rotoflex International, a leading sup- plier of web inspection and finishing equipment has been acquired by MAI Holdings. The asset-only acquisition was finalized on Dec. 11, 2008. The transac- tion marks a strong step for future busi- ness and growth plans for both Rotoflex and its new owners. As the global leader among inspection and finishing equipment, Rotoflex will retain its focus on delivering innovative and customer-centric designs. It will maintain an independent brand presence, building on an already strong platform of progressive innovation, creative solutions and advanced technology. Sun Increases Canadian Ink Prices Sun Chemical increased prices for packaging, commercial sheetfed, and news inks in Canada between 5-12 per- cent effective Jan. 1. “The price of oil has receded in recent weeks, but the costs of pigments, pigment intermediaries, resins, solvents and other key additives continue to increase,” said Rod Staveley, president of Sun Chemical Canada. “These compo- nents make up the largest percentage of most ink products that we manufacture. The rapid depreciation of the Canadian dollar is another factor affecting the price increases in Canada. While the recent price of oil has helped reduce these im- pacts, our total costs continue to increase. We will continue to work on controlling our own costs closely with our supply chain partners, to improve our internal operations and to develop new value ori- ented products that can help customers grow their business.” Obituary: Russell Joyce, 39 Russell Joyce, president of Flint Group Narrow Web, passed away suddenly Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 in Malmo, Sweden. He was 39 years old. Joyce began his ink industry career in 1991 with Coates Lorilleux in England. He joined the Narrow Web Group of Akzo Nobel Inks (ANI) in 1997 and held both technical and market development positions. Following the acquisition of ANI, BASF Printing Systems and Flint Ink by CVC, he became general manager of Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America for Flint Group’s Narrow Web business. He was named president of the division in March 2007. “Russell was WWLC Needs Volunteer Printers for ISO Project Attention,Wide-Web Printers/ Converters: FTA’s Wide Web Leadership Council needs your help.
