Home Living : February 3rd 2009
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 3, 2009 HOMELIVING Designing ways John Eussen Homewares and design specialist Sustainable on the inside Throughout the years we have all heard about sustainable building and design that has contributed enormously to lifestyle and how houses are built. We also understand the importance of trees, gardens and the environment and what we need to do to combat global warming. At last there are products available for interiors that have partial or 100 per cent sustainable elements. We are searching for natural products. Consumers are now starting to ask about packaging, contents of the product, its origin and benefits. They are also asking where it has been processed. There are amazing products from various companies that are taking the lead in the decorating field in regard to ecology. These include paints from Murobond that have natural derivatives from milk and are in the Natural Paint selection. The benefits with this are the renewable qualities and the health advantages from reduced VOC (volatile organic substances). The product does not contain any petrochemicals or heavy metals. Textile companies like Creation Baumann and Hemp Gallery are also now producing interior textile fabrics that have highly renewable and sustainable qualities. Hemp is anti-bacterial and seldom eaten by pests. Organic cotton bed linen is also is produced without the use of pesticide. Properly fitted window coverings installed over double glazed windows can reduce the average household heating bill by up to 10 per cent and reduce heat loss by up to 47 per cent. There is a remarkable new curtain track system which helps contribute towards this called EVO tracking.
