Home Living : February 10th 2009
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, February 10, 2009 1 Join food revival In the garden Judy Horton is an advisor for Yates Around the world there's a marked revival of interest in growing food plants. Whether it's the result of the harder economic times or simply a yearning to return to traditional values of the past, the home vegie patch has never been more popular. If you're a newcomer to productive gardening, start off slowly and gently. An easy way to develop your skills is by planting up a few pots -- or a small plot -- of herbs. Chives (pictured) are some of the easiest. They come in two varieties: garlic chives (flat leaves, white flowers, super tough); or onion chives (fine leaves, mauve flowers, moderately hardy). Basil is popular but it only grows during the warm months and dies as winter approaches. It's best planted in spring. Parsley has a slightly longer life. It tends to last into its second year before going to seed and (hopefully) spreading itself around the garden. Sage, marjoram and thyme are drought-tolerant herbs with tough Mediterranean constitutions. Rosemary also comes from the Mediterranean but, because it grows into a large shrub, it's usually best planted out in the garden. There are, however, some smaller rosemary varieties that are suitable for pots.
