PLANTS & PROCESSES MAKE THE PURCHASE A complete solution from one vendor can make prepress much easier. A buyer can be assured that the tools work well together, and may be able to negotiate certain, reasonable, fair packages. If you are making a purchase-whether digital platemaking or workflow-make sure to examine the non-product related features provided by the supplier, such as availability of nearby service and availability of financing assistance from the vendor. Currently, the bank might not be as helpful as it has been in the past. The printer should make sure that training is available when the purchase is made. Consultative services can be extremely valuable. Integration services that will improve the ROI of the prepress system can be placed with the order, if the vendor is capable. The vendor can take a step back from the business and really advise the printer of the best ap- proaches for the prepress process. The best vendors provide tailor-made solu- tions, rather than just sup- plying one size fits all an- swers. Also, some vendors can assure that a product is running-and keeps on running-in the shortest period of time. your equipment. Make sure the room is ready for computer connectivity. Finally, make sure that air quality is considered. Depending upon the type of equipment you install, filters or exhausts may be necessary to protect your staff. TRAINING Training is an important part of the implementation process. There are two parts of the training program. One, of course, is the process of learning how to operate the new equipment and software. The other is the process of understanding the context in which it is used. For those who have limited prepress experience, an extensive training program to teach the basics of prepress is imperative. Typical programs are taught on-site, or in vendor classrooms. Don't overlook computer networking. Digital files have to be sent to your equipment. Make sure the room is ready for computer connectivity. INSTAllATION Make sure that you request valid pre-site instructions from your vendor. A good vendor will provide a very thorough checklist of pre-installation preparations that must be undertaken before any serious hardware is installed. For example-and it seems far too obvious-some companies do not plan to accommodate enough room when they install their equipment. If the size of the space is too small, the installa- tion can be delayed because the room has to be built out. Make sure that the right electrical drops have been created. If a printer has staffed its department with qualified personnel, train- ing can take one to three weeks. For a complete, new prepress department, it can become very expensive, and takes much more time, starting from scratch. TYPICAL EXAMPLE: JONES PACKAGING The recent installation of EskoArtwork software and hardware at Jones Packaging Oones) is a good example of how a printer/ converter can approach the building of a prepress department.
