2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 17, 2009 HOMELIVING Re-cover or replace? Designing ways John Eussen Homewares and design specialist It is often a dilemma whether to re- cover a favourite sofa or be tempted to buy a new one. It doesn't take a lot to spruce things up -- mainly time, some imagination and a budget that suits. When you are looking at re-covering a sofa or buying a new one consider the following issues: Cost of the new fabric Labour cost Fabric durability How often the sofa is used? Is it for high traffic areas? Is it mainly used by children? Is it a feature sofa that is mainly there to be looked and complement the decor? How strong is the sofa frame? Can you feel the framework through the fabric? Do the arms wobble? Do the legs need repair? Is the sofa sprung and does it need to be resprung? Are decorative cushions included in the cost? In some cases the cost of repair is going to overwhelm you so buying new could be the answer and more cost-effective. If the sofa has antique qualities or is an heirloom, and your budget allows you, then re-covering is probably your answer. Either way, do not be afraid to ask questions up front and compare cost with requirements. There are a number of very good Australian and overseas manufacturers, however, qualities should always be compared. Equally, there are very good re-upholstery businesses and price and quality should also be compared. A good upholsterer will always advise on whether an existing sofa is worth recovering, but make sure you discuss the above issues.
