Home Living : February 17th 2009
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 17, 2009 Wise power play HOMELIVING Using energy wisely will assist in reducing greenhouse emissions for a greener country, according to EnergyAustralia. Switch off standby power Standby power can account for up to 10 per cent of household energy use, or $100 a year on bills. Home office and entertainment appliances are the worst offenders. Switch appliances off at the power button or, better still, at the wall. Convert your hot water system Hot water is the biggest energy user in the home. Convert your electric hot water to solar, heat pump or natural gas and save up to three tonnes of CO2 a year and up to $250 a year off bills. Rebates of up to $3000 are available. Get rid of that old second fridge Old fridges can use two to three times the electricity of a newer fridge. Getting rid of the old fridge can save up to $200 a year on bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to one tonne a year. Switch to gas Gas has about one-third of the greenhouse emissions of electricity. Gas heating is about 80 per cent efficient compared to around 30 per cent efficiency for electricity. Cool your home efficiently Make your home thermally efficient with ceiling insulation. NSW insulation rebates of up to $300 are available -- go to www.environment.nsw.gov.au/rebates. Choose the right cooling option for your needs and use it efficiently. For more energy-efficiency tips go to www.energy.com.au/efficiency or call 131 535. Don't flush money down the gurgler A running tap can waste more than 10 litres of water a minute. Putting a plug in the sink is a simple way to be wise with water. Rinsing vegetables in a plugged, half-filled sink instead of under a running tap can save 15 litres of water each time. Rinsing dishes in a plugged sink can save similar amounts of water. Even turning off the tap and rinsing a razor in a plugged sink when shaving can add up to big water savings over time. Another way to make a big difference in water use is by plugging leaks around the home. A seemingly minor leak, such as a dripping tap, can waste more than 2000 litres of water a month, or more than 60 litres a day. A leaking toilet can waste more than 40 litres of water a day. Check for leaks regularly and have them repaired. Sydney Water can arrange for a plumber to fix minor indoor leaks as part of the WaterFix service. The plumber will also install a water- efficient showerhead and fit flow regulators to taps. To book a WaterFix, call 1800 995 886. For water-efficient ideas outside the home, book Sydney Water's Love Your Garden service. For a fee of between $33 and $55, a horticulturalist will visit and evaluate your garden's watering needs and install smart watering tools. To register for a Love Your Garden service, call 1300 307 130.
