6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Tips to make you shutter Write to Ask The Experts about individual problems in the home. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your question or fax Ask The Experts 9689 5399. HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS James Bailey wants to make his home more energy-efficient and wants to start with the windows. He wants to install systems that will keep the heat out in summer and the cold out during winter. Where should he start? ABSOL Awning Blind & Shutter Solutions director Steven Payne says Mr Bailey is on the right track starting with the windows as glass is a poor conductor, allowing heat and cold through. What should we look at installing? Awnings have been proven to stop up to 90 per cent of heat entering a room through the glass. We don't want to darken the house. There are many different styles of awnings to suit most applications. There are even fabrics that allow you to maintain a view. What else should we look at? The next best option is to fit a window treatment inside but it must seal the window relatively well. Shutters are a great choice in this situation as they have minimal gaps and provide a barrier. They insulate homes during both hotter and colder months. The angle blades can be tilted to deflect sunlight while maintaining a view. Should these be fitted inside or out? These are predominantly fitted on the inside because shutters are more of a decor item. Outdoor fitting is more of a functional system to stop the heat before it hits the glass and consideration needs to be given to how they will operate. There is a huge range of products on offer if you are looking for sun control, which includes awnings, louvres and shutters. Shutters or privacy screens are particularly suited to balconies, with many different styles available. If you are still in doubt, visit the showroom.
