Home Living : March 3rd 2009
2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, March 3, 2009 HOMELIVING Vegies go to pot In the garden Judy Horton is an advisor for Yates New gardeners often don't realise autumn's a wonderful season for planting vegies. In some ways it can be better than spring because the cooler weather allows the plants to grow gently and steadily, without rushing to seed (which spoils their flavour). So this is a good month to sow or plant some of your own homegrown goodies. And, for novices, it's often best to begin by producing your vegies in pots. Starting on a small scale, and not trying to plant too much at once, will increase your chances of success. Pots can also give you more flexibility in positioning. For example, they can be placed in an obvious location where they're hard to miss and less likely to be neglected. Just remember, the vegies you choose for pots will need to be relatively small growers without large root systems. Lettuce, especially the non-hearting varieties like mignonette, coral or cos, are good choices for planting now. Silverbeet, spinach and spring onions can go in as well. This is also the time to start root vegetables (like beetroot, carrots and turnips) but, for pots, it's wise to choose dwarf versions such as baby beets, baby carrots and japanese turnips. Use a good-quality potting mix and feed the plants regularly with a liquid fertiliser. The larger the container, the easier it will be to look after (larger containers are less likely to dry out. Unfortunately, over time, dirt can become ingrained in the tiles and grout joints, which can be very hard to remove by home owners. At Tile Cleaning Solutions, we have a way of cleaning that "hard to remove" dirt from tiles. The process we use utilises hot water at high pressure to remove all the in-ground dirt and oils from the tiles and grout joints. A powerful vacuum simultaneously removes the water and dirt from the floor, leaving it totally clean, just like the first day the tiles were installed. It sounds messy...it isn't. Because all the cleaning is completed in a dome that is attached to the floor, there is no mess or overspray. We can clean and/or seal all internal and external tiles, pavers, stone surfaces, stencilcrete, stencilled & concrete driveways. MINOR REPAIRS ALSO DONE BY A QUALIFIED TILER.
