Install home insulation off your own bat If you don't have insulation, now is a great time to install it. The Federal Government's rebate program offers up to $1600 for ceiling insulation in owner-occupied homes. There is also a rebate of up to $1000 for landlords to insulate their rental properties. Ceiling insulation is the most effective way to protect your home from the elements all-year round, EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors says. ''Insulation can cut heating and cooling costs by as much as 30 per cent, which can be over $100 a year.'' he says. Two important things to consider when installing insulation are what it's made from and its thermal resistance (or R value). When it comes to the R value, the higher the number the better it will insulate. Around R3.0 is recommended in Sydney. The most common type of insulation is made from fibreglass batts. However other insulation options include rockwool, natural wool or polyester batts. Loose fill insulation can be made from cellulose fibre, natural wool or granulated rockwool. It may settle over time, so make sure the contractor quotes a settled R value. Details for rebates: Call 1800 808 571 or visit www.environment.gov.au/ energyefficiency .
