HOMELIVING . ; 1 -""' -- 1 "J. -.ii:=r Don't be exposed Those taking advantage of the Federal Government's ceiling insulation subsidy should ensure they do not create a fire hazard with recessed downlights. Reaching temperatures of up to 300C, halogen down lights can ignite timber beams, insulation or build-up, including flammable dust if they are left exposed, unsealed or disturbed. Fire brigades have long warned of the hazards caused by exposed downlights, which in one region reportedly cause a ceiling fire about every four days. The Government has committed to paying up to S 1600 for ceiling insulation in older homes. It expects 2.7 million owner-occupiers to take advantage of the offer. However in the rush to install insulation in their ceilings, homeowners should exercise caution to ensure they do not inadvertently create an overhead fire hazard. To ensure a well-insulated and fire-safe ceiling, homeowners should install sealed retro-fit enclosures around down lights that are designed to abut insulation as well as timber beams. Australian company, Arrowform, produces an approved, off-the-shelf solution called Isolite Guard that seals off · the downlight. Available from most insulation companies for S15 each.
