HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS Devastating storms, floods and other natural disasters leave many homes in need of a major clean-up. What can residents do to dry out their properties and make them habitable? Kennards Hire national general manager Bill Whitehouse says Kennards is geared to respond quickly to emergencies and has played a key role in the aftermath of major Australian disasters. ''With more than 90 hire centres, including 26 in Sydney, we have an enormous stock of equipment which can be quickly put to use,'' he says. ''We help individual householders, contractors and the emergency services. Specially-prepared crates of equipment are stored at central locations, ready to be moved anywhere in Australia.'' What equipment can Kennards provide? Tarpaulins, generators, water extracting machines, carpet dryers, dehumidifiers, heaters, chainsaws, bushfire-fighting pumps, ladders, floodlights, cherry- pickers and more. Is it available after-hours? Yes, equipment can be obtained 24 hours a day. How do you treat wet carpet? If it has major damage it is best lifted by professionals and taken away and dried. However, if the damage is not extensive, use the water- extraction function of a carpet-cleaning machine to remove as much water as possible, and then put a carpet dryer to work. This plugs into a household power point, blows out a stream of cold air at force. The drying process is faster if you can poke the snout underneath the carpet, but the machine also works if placed on top. Cold air is used because hot air breeds mildew and can cause shrinkage. For the same reason, heaters are not recommended. When is a dehumidifier used? In confined spaces, or where there is high humidity, a dehumidifier removes moisture from the air and collects it in a bucket. How do you dry the actual building? A fan-forced space heater, which runs off an LPG bottle, will do this job. What sort of tarpaulins can Kennards provide? There are various sizes and are known as builders' tarps because they are heavy-duty and tougher and thicker than some other types.
