2 HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 HOMELIVING Roll on to quality Paint & decorate Tony Isgrove Painter, decorator, and president of the Master Painters Association Using the right tool for the job is certainly true when it comes to painting. If you are going to do the job yourself it's worth spending a little to get the tools to help you do it right the first time. They will pay for themselves, saving you money in the long run. Brushes Quality acrylic paints and brushes will ensure your painting project looks good and lasts. Quality brushes generally have longer bristles, but how do you choose the best paintbrush for your job? As a general rule, synthetic bristles are better. Angular sash brushes are excellent for precise work such as cutting in adjoining surfaces and different sized brushes have different functions. Use 25 to 50mm brushes for trim; 50 to 63mm for doors, 75mm for larger areas such as ceilings and walls. Quality brushes give a smooth application and a thicker, more uniform paint film for better hiding and durability. Rollers Quality rollers tend to be thicker and fluffier for greater paint capacity with less drip and spatter. They also apply the paint thickly and smoothly. A better quality roller will hold its shape better, does not shed fibres and is reusable. For the smoothest application of acrylic coatings, use lamb's wool or synthetic roller sleeves. Mohair nap roller sleeves are appropriate for oil-based products. Nap length is also an important consideration. As a rule, short nap rollers 5mm to 8mm are best for smooth surfaces, medium nap 12mm for ceilings and walls and long nap 20mm are used for masonry or concrete block walls. The final piece of a paint rolling system is a pole. Many styles are available in different lengths. If you are able to pay a bit extra, a telescopic pole is the best.
