The concept of a SMS is similar to an Environmental Management System (EMS), except it is more encompassing than addressing just "green" issues. The SMS incorporates sustainabil- ity issues impacting the 3PS. As the concept of developing an EMS has been around many years, there are a number of EMS guid- ance documents available that can be used as a foundation for a company to develop its SMS. For those companies that have al- ready implemented ISO 9000 or ISO 14001 EMS, they are familiar with the concept of a management system. For those that have not, implementing a management system is totally new. An EMS combines continuous improvement management tools and principles with proven environmental assessment methodologies-including risk and evaluation of substitutes and accountability of associated costs. EMSs assist companies in making sound environmental decisions as part of daily business practices. As a result, EMSs help companies to reduce impacts across media (land, air and water); use energy and other re- sources efficiently; better manage the risk associated with using hazardous chemicals (both regulated and unregulated); consider long-term impact of the process and final product; and integrate environmental and worker health and safety requirements into the day-to-day operations. Taking the EMS as a basis, the SMS in- cludes many more areas of a facility's op- erations. A company's journey toward sus- tainability often begins with the adoption of an EMS. Once the EMS is operational, the issues of employee health and safety, as well as social equity or societal relation- ships need to be addressed. Employee health and safety issues can be easily in- corporated alongside the "E" in the EMS. For the social equity, a facility needs to look at its stakeholders both inside and outside the company. Society expects companies to be accountable for both their environmental and social impacts. Companies must accept responsibility and take actions where needed. The expectations of employees and potential employees of work conditions are also changing. While the ultimate de- ciding factor is still financial, people are considering the company's values when joining an organization. In communicat- ing its commitment and progress made toward becoming more sustainable, a true SMS addresses the concerns of multiple stakeholders by implementing a set of More and more, consumers are balancing their buying decisions against a personal set of ethics and values that address sustain ability. management strategies allowing for an organization to focus on the impact organizations have on nature, and strive also to in- clude people and communities. Each SMS needs to contain the following elements: · Review of the organization's goals. · Analyses of impacts and legal requirements. · Setting objectives and targets to reduce impacts and comply with legal requirements. · Establishment programs to meet these objectives and targets. · Monitoring and measuring progress in achieving objectives. · Ensuring employees' awareness and competence. · Reviewing progress of the SMS and making improvements. · Communicating results with external stakeholders. -;+.+ . .
