FTA TODAY VI III( III Q - ø z - ø (I" F oeus on the little things and the big things will take care of themselves." Not bad advice from a modern day icon. No... not anyone remotely related to the is flexo world: Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, 43 years at the helm of this perennial Division I -A powerhouse-where the average tenure of a head coach is around 4 years-59 years in coaching altogether, owning a staggering 75 percent winning percentage over his career. Suffice it to say that his credo has certainly been fulfilled over the years for the Nittany Lions! Business is complex and demanding. To succeed we must purposefully define our key objectives. We must then focus on them on a week-by-week, day-by-day, and minute-by-minute basis. During the daily course of business life, however, there are an endless series of events on which most of us have to focus-most small, some large: projects, tasks, presentations, training sessions, scheduled meetings, impromptu meetings, phone calls, you name them. The pace and unending flow of these events, the continuous stream of interruptions, meetings called at the last minute, the pressure to meet deadlines, emergencies and frequent change means that there is little time to reflect on events-they happen, they are dealt with, they are gone, they are forgotten. And during the course of all of this, the really im- portant objectives are temporarily forgotten or forced out of the mainstream. It is maybe only during the "quiet" periods that the realization dawns: nothing of impor- tance has been achieved during the last few days or even weeks. Very often, this is not a time management issue. It is a lack of focus. We need to find a way to help us concentrate on the things that are important. Organizational business plans-at least the more comprehensive ones-contain any number of goals and objectives that the management team plans to achieve dur- ing the stated time period. These statements of intention normally take a tremendous amount of time and planning resources to develop. And, if done properly, they can come together to create a very detailed roadmap for the individual members of the team to utilize in order to make their business successful and profitable. Yet, all too often, structured documents like business plans never see the light of day after the ink dries on the pages! FTAjFFTA's 2009 organizational business plan is the result of many hours of thought, discussion, writing, reviewing, then re-writing...all in an attempt to define our intended business objectives for the year. In all, there are 83 distinct organiza- tional objectives contained in this year's document. With that many specific targeted achievements planned for a 12-month period, it's imperative to divide them up into the "have-to-do's" and "would-be-nice-to-do's" so members of the staff, as well as our volunteer network, can clearly identify where organizational resources need to be focused. The set of prioritized objectives-approved by the Board of DirectorsjTrustees- is posted on the organizational SharePoint website for the leadership, management and staff to access so that they will be ever-present throughout the year and also ensuring that progress can be openly monitored and tracked... especially for the mission-critical ones! Through the successful achievement of the "little things" (Le. individual organizational objectives) ...FTAjFFTA is that much more equipped to realize its overall long-term mission of providing a significant and unique value proposition to the FTA membership. Moss (recently retired vice president of Galvanic Printing Co. and presi- dent of Flexi Printing Plate) was rec- ognized by the Printing Industries Alliance (PIA) at its 2008 Franklin Event with the prestigious John Peter Zenger Medal. This honor is bestowed upon an individual in the graphic communications industry that has exhibited exemplary char- acter in the form of selfless courage, charity, activism or service. With open nominations sought by PIA from all segments of the graphics community, several dif- ferent individuals nominated Fred for his many years of community service, working to better the lives of children in the cities of Paterson and Hackensack in New Jersey. Over the years, I've personally been amazed by Fred's commitment to helping others, whether it's trav- eling with his church to build hous- es for the poor in Mexico, to print- ing Christmas cards free of charge for local children's organizations to sell, to helping re-train inmates giv- ing them a second chance in life, to printing FTA's Golden Anniversary Commemorative Journal... gratis!
