FLEXO Magazine : April 2009
FTA TODAY FIRST 4.0— Hot Off the Press Initial Reviews…Very Positive! T he long-awaited arrival of the latest edition of the most important and anx- iously anticipated fl exographic industry document is fi nally here. FIRST 4.0, years in the making…drawing from the expertise and experiences of hundreds of supportive industry professionals, was offi cially introduced to the marketplace on April 8th, as deliveries of the publication commenced along with a variety of special fl exographically printed pieces accompanying the book. Anyone involved in the project knows the great depth and breadth of coverage con- tained in this newest industry reference document, as compared to any of the past three editions. Customers who placed their pre-orders—some quite a while ago—will soon also discover that all the document’s “hype” building up to its release are certainly not simply a sales tactic! At close to 320 pages, the exhaustive coverage of all areas of the fl exographic workfl ow, along with an excellent variety of supportive illustrations (graphs, charts, tables, photos, etc.), is being utilized as the solid foundation on which all current and future TEST training curricula and certifi cation programs will be built. Although the list of contributors that have played a role in bringing this major collabor- ative eff ort to a successful completion takes up six pages in the Introduction section of the book—whether it be through writing copy, conducting research, providing graph- ics, reviewing data, and so on—I would be remiss if I did not recognize the core group of individuals that have spent countless hours over the past few years seeing the project through to the very end. Their untir- ing dedication, vision and leadership cannot be overstated! FTA/FFTA and the entire fl exo industry owe this group of professionals a great deal of gratitude for their eff orts. I would also be remiss if I did not rec- ognize the great deal of work performed by our “hired guns” on this project: Bill Pope, FTA Technical Director; Michelle Beuscher, ProjectManager/Editor; Katie Dubois, Graphic Designer/Layout Artist; and John Moss, Jr. and Paul Ragas of Galvanic Printing. OK, here’s where this column earns its THANKS TO THE FIRST 4.0 LEADERSHIP! Eric Ferguson, EskoArtwork (FIRST Chair) Scott Gilbert, Smurfi t-Stone Container Corp. (FIRST Vice Chair) Al Bowers, RR Donnelley Mike Ferrari, Procter & Gamble Robb Frimming, Schawk Inc. Neil Harrelson, Schawk Inc. Jean Jackson, Praxair Surface Technologies Mark Mazur, DuPont Imaging Technologies Arleen Neustein, Excelsior Packaging Group Wayne Peachey, name. As you will notice in the title of this edition, FIRST 4.0 is being presented a bit diff erently than past eff orts. Similar to computer software, version 4.0 is re- ally simply the beginning. Plans are already underway to publish additional material that didn’t make it into the book, address new technologies and workfl ows as they are developed, and, yes, even correct any of those pesky errors that inevitably slip by the editors! So, updates in the form of version 4.1, 4.2 and so on will be posted to a special FIRST section of the FTA website. To assist us in making these essential “enhancements,” we need industry feedback on FIRST 4.0. After having read through the document, please take some time to provide your thoughts to us via email at FIRST@fl exography.org. Feel free to share your com- ments, suggestions, company data, even your critiques on the publication. Through receiving your “Engaging Ideas,” we will be better able to more eff ectively plan for and publish vital additions and upgrades to keep FIRST a cur- rent, living document for years to come. Thanks to every- one who made this monumental achievement possible!
