EXCELLENCE AWARDS mented John McDonald, one of the design judges. Greg LaFond, another design judge, added, “I like that border treatment. It’s a little fugitive but it brings everything else to the front.” Another gold winner, Michael & David® Lust™ label, was a strong contender for the top spot. One thing that counted against the wine label was original concept art. “I doubt the illustration was designed for that package,” noted McDonald. Alan Jeff coat, the third design judge, stated, “There is too much of that font script in that product category. The designer could have broken it up, unless it’s the logo, but then 2006 Zinfandel all earned top scores. MackayMitchell impressed judges with line work on uncoated and coated stock, bringing in one silver and one gold medal respectively. Commercial Envelope was honored with bronze, silver and gold medals. Britain-based Encore Washington won two bronzes, one silver and one gold prize. Tension Envelope made arguably the biggest splash by stealing eight total awards—two bronzes, three silvers and three golds. But it was Encore Washington’s gold-winning work that was deemed Best of Show. But on narrow web you can do rotary screen, foil, varnish and so forth,” said LaFond. Jeff coat noted the designer of Lust “took the medium and used it to his/her advantage.” He added, “For what the fi nch food is, I think it’s well done. For that size, to be able to print that is very strong.” Another job, Evolved 4 lb Hog Grub™ , drew positive—and hu- morous—remarks from the judges. “The blazing orange and the picture of the boar says it all,” observed McDonald. Jeff coat said the excellent print and the image of the hog brought together two opposite ends of the spectrum, calling it “Larry the Cable Guy meets Miss America.” He added, “This is so on target with that market. As far as designed for fl exo, it’s perfect!” McDonald spoke similarly. “You don’t want to be too slick with this product.” INCREASING COMPLEXITY Judges examined a unique collection of print jobs, some featur- ing high-end, high-line screen graphics and fl esh tones, others exhibiting more basic concepts and showing a growing understanding of fl exographic printing principles. This is the norm for those who are responsible for scoring the envelope, newspaper/ publication, student and self promotion categories. Eighteen envelopes were tagged for recognition by judges. Commercial Envelope Mfg. Co. Inc., Encore Washington Ltd., MackayMitchell, Tension Envelope Corp. and Univenture Inc. 64 FLEXO MAY 2009 highly praised for its reproduction of realistic fl esh tones on the image of an infant on a soft white background. “There was a huge increase in the amount of consistency in the envelopes entries this year,” said Jean Jackson, Praxair Surface Technologies, a level of execution judge. She also noticed an increase in the amount of uncoated process work for envelopes. “The amount of ink coverage and the complexity of the designs being done today points to the skill this industry has mastered over the years,” commented Pat Kent, Pamarco Global Graphics, also a level of execution judge. “The one item that really stood out for me was the advantage of using digital plates in process printing on coated stock. This seemed to provide an advantage in the clarity and sharpness of the print. The Best of Show is an example of this.” Among the student work, four awards were bestowed upon three high schools: Fairfi eld Career and Technology Center, Fort Mill High School and Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School. The latter earned two awards: one gold and one silver. Fort Mill received a silver medal, while Fairfi eld Career and Tech took a bronze. On the college level, Appalachian State University (bronze), Clemson University (silver), Dunwoody College of Technology (silver and gold) and Fullerton College (bronze) all received nods. Jackson proclaimed the student entries showcased some “nice work.” She also saw an increase in the number of high school entries. Kent added, “It is always good to see the number of student entries. Every year there seems to be more entries and some advancement in the designs chosen.” Jackson www. f le xography. org
