Home Living : May 12th 2009
2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, May 12, 2009 HOMELIVING Licking allergies Paint & decorate Tony Isgrove Painter, decorator, and president of the Master Painters Association With such an arrayofpaint and suppliers on the market, choosing the right paint can be confusing for the home renovator. As with everything, technologyhas come a long way and paint's no exception. Recent developments have seen a dramatic move to more environmentally-friendly products. One of the most recent changes has been the move to paints with low volatile organic compounds. These compounds are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. They include a variety of chemicals thatmayhave short-term and long-term adverse health effects. These compounds are not only present in paints but in a variety of other products used every day. Regardless of which paint you use, always have adequate ventilation. If your property was built prior to 1970 then you may need to check for the existence of lead paint as it could have harmful effects on children, pregnant women and men working, renovating or living in this environment. Even thoughlead paint has been banned since the early '70s there may be incidences where they have been used on properties after that time. If you are unsure, a lead test canbe undertaken by either you or your painting contractor. Technological developments have made it possible to make paints that have anti-bacterial properties. According to the Asthma Foundation, exposure to mould may trigger asthma, hayfever or other symptoms. Check with the foundation for recommended products.
