Home Living : May 19th 2009
6 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, May 19, 2009 Bright options HOMELIVING Lighting plays an important part of the home and can account for up to 10 per cent of household energy use. According to EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors there are ways to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The national ban on standard incandescent light bulbs starts in November, so replace them with energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. They shine just as brightly as standard bulbs, last up to eight times longer and use 80 per cent less energy. Where they are not suitable -- for example circuits with dimming switches -- a mains voltage halogen light bulb is an option. They will still be available after the ban is introduced. They look identical to standard incandescent bulbs but use about 30 per cent less energy and last twice as long. Halogen downlights are popular but can have high running costs. While each one uses about the same energy as a standard bulb, we tend to install many more of them in a room. The simplest solution is to replace them with infra-red coated halogens. They use 30 per cent less energy and last twice as long. Energy-efficient compact fluorescent downlights are also available. They use about 80 per cent less energy than standard halogen downlights and last longer, but are better suited to new installations. LED lighting is also getting attention as an energy-efficient option. While still expensive to buy, they use about one- fifth of the energy of a standard lamp for the same light output. Manufacturers claim they can last for more than 50,000 hours. First Alert spokesman Thino Kiefer said more than one-third of house fires occurred during the winter months of June to August, many of which started at night when everyone was asleep. ''These statistics alone reinforce the absolute need for all homes to be fitted with ample smoke alarms,'' he said. ''As stated by all the relevant fire authorities, when asleep, humans simply don't smell smoke.'' Industry statistics show residential fires increased by 17 per cent over the last decade. There were 82 deaths last year alone yet fire authorities said 80 per cent of them would not occur if a smoke alarm was fitted. Other First Alert research showed many people were not fitting enough smoke alarms, were not installing them in the right position and were removing batteries permanently because cooking or showering had triggered the alarm, Mr Kiefer said. First Alert manufactures smoke alarms, fire blankets and fire extinguishers, and recommends photoelectric smoke alarms be fitted in each bedroom, hallway and living room, or near kitchens and bathrooms. Photoelectric technology detects smouldering fires and fires starting in areas remote from the smoke alarm. Ionisation is the alternative technology available and is more effective at detecting flaming fires. First Alert also recommends that alarm vents are vacuumed once a year, ideally on the day the battery is replaced.
