HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9 Home and dry HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE Any builder will tell you standard plasterboard will not be able to handle prolonged contact with water. After a short period of time, it will start to crumble and disintegrate, and the lining paper becomes detached. Unlike the standard boards, Gyprock Aquachek plasterboard is designed for wet areas. Its resistance to water and humidity ensures walls stay in excellent condition, when used as recommended with the usual waterproofing systems. Aquachek is ideal for all walls and ceilings in bathrooms, laundry renovations and new constructions. Gyprock Aquachek can be easily fixed to the frame with screws or nails. In showers and wet areas it should be coated with a waterproof membrane before being tiled. In other areas, such as the laundry, kitchen and bathroom, the sheets may be tiled directly or simply painted. Aquachek plasterboard has unique moisture-resistant additives in the core and specially-treated face and back linerboards to act as a barrier to moisture and humidity. It also reduces the seepage of moisture through the wallboard from areas exposed to moisture. However it is not intended for total waterproofing or use in the construction of immersed or permanently-wet areas. Steel is true to its core » ADVERTISING FEATURE When planning a renovation or extension, most homeowners or builders tend to use the same materials as the house. Home-owner and builder Glenn Harwood chose to extend with a steel frame instead of timber as it comes ready-to-install and is lightweight. This meant he could erect it himself with the help of just one other person. Mr Harwood says he thought frames made from Truecore steel had several advantages. ''The steel frames are light enough that two people can easily assemble them,'' he said. ''In the morning, the first part of the steel frame was delivered. ''We started to put it up and had it all done by early afternoon.'' In addition to providing a strong building base, Truecore steel frames offer protection from frustrating and costly termite infestation. ''Having been subject to termite attacks before on the existing timber frame, using a steel frame ensured that the new house frame would be safe,'' Mr Harwood says. He used steel frames to extend the front of the house and to add a second level, thereby creating an entirely new look for the property.
