Home Living : June 9th 2009
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 9, 2009 Watts in store for the future HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS After seeing advertisements advising homeowners they can receive up to $8000 from the government for installing solar photo-voltaic panels to generate electricity on the roof, Jane Robertson would like to know more. Modern Solar chief executive officer Laurie Mallia says he can help people choose the best system for their use and help them claim the government grant. What are the benefits of installing a solar photo- voltaic system? You will benefit in two ways -- by saving money on power bills and by doing your bit for the environment by reducing reliance on coal-fired electricity. Why should I choose Modern Solar to install my system? Modern Solar is part of The Modern Group, a 100 per cent Australian-owned home improvements company which has been around since 1979. We bring a hard-earned reputation for quality and value to our solar division, which has been operating since 2007. In that time, we've installed more than 2000 solar generation units nationally. What sort of rebate will I receive? If your taxable income is below $100,000 you can receive up to $8000 from the Federal Government if you install a solar generation system on your roof and connect it to the electricity grid. The federal government rebate gives you $8 for every watt of electricity your solar grid connect system can produce, to a maximum of $8000 for a 1kW system. How much of my home's electricity needs does the average system generate? A typical Sydney home uses about 20kWh (kilowatt hours) of energy per day, or around 7300kWh a year (including hot water). A 1kW system will provide 4kWh of power per day, or around 20 per cent of an average household's daily energy needs. This can reduce your use of coal-fired energy by almost ,500kWh per year, saving you around $200 on your power bills. How much of a cut in carbon dioxide emissions will I achieve with a grid connect system? The average vehicle travels 20,000km a year, which discharges about 3.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. A 2kW grid-connected system will prevent 3.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide being generated through coal-fired power generation. Installing a 2kW solar system, therefore, is like taking one car off the road for a year. When does the rebate end? The rebate ends on 30 June this year, so you will have to be quick if you want to claim the $8000 rebate. Call for a full energy inspection. Details: Modern Solar, 1 Meridian Place, Bella Vista.
