TECHNOLOGIES & TECHNIQUES PRESSURIZED LOOP This autosampler also does not use a syringe. The main difference between this system and the previously mentioned pressure balanced system is that a six-port valve is used to control the sample injection volume. This system is more complex to set up initially but is also very reproducible and the user does not need to be present during the entire sample series. SUMMARY The manual headspace injection technique is low-cost and requires relatively simple hardware, but has limited accuracy and precision. This technique is best used when only a few samples need to be analyzed. Automatic headspace samplers control all of the sample heating and injection steps to give more accurate and precise results. The user does not handle hot sample vials or syringes. These systems require no operator intervention and can be operated overnight if necessary. If the laboratory has the resources to invest in an automated headspace system it provides for maximum laboratory effi ciency and productivity. ■ About the Author: Burton Todd is the Technical Director of Chromlab.
