FTA TODAY Signifi cant time and effort was spent investigating and researching possibilities for CPCC’s project. CPCC’s Central Campus and at the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) Charlotte campus. The group also accessed its own personal network for information on coffee shops at other colleges nationwide, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, George Mason University, and University of Maryland. The team documented logos, color schemes, design trends, and the overall “feel” of each shop, and its brand- ing. They also looked into how specifi c items were printed, and how each could be printed. Findings showed that a mixture of modern and rustic elements such as earth tones and wood or other nature patterns were the most common. After examining CPCC’s press capabilities, touring a local printer/converter’s plant, and conducting a study, the students determined they would attempt to produce straw wrappers, sugar or honey packets, napkins, coffee bags, and a menu. The original concept was to use actual college or university logos on the printed material, but permission issues limited them to using CPCC’s logo and emulating fi ctional schools by using single letters in a collegiate font. The fi nal design was selected based on the results from three focus groups. The team researched the correct and necessary applications of FDA information and bar codes. At the conclusion of six months of research and execution, the quartet produced samples of return-customer punch cards, coasters, and bags of ground coffee. ■ The Team from CPCC: Zach Onstot, Andy Knapp, Jason Reid, Priscilla Kay and Flexo Instructor Zachary Blackburn. www. f le xography. org JUNE 2009 FLEXO 63
