FLEXO Magazine : Sustainable Spring 2009
All art courtesy Global Packaging Inc. Q: What were the reasons behind this desire? Donohue:We always respond to customer demand and seek to enhance the value we bring to customer relationships. We have always believed that efficient, effective use of re- sources with minimal impact on our surrounding community and the overall environment is important. We have in place pollution prevention programs, energy efficiency programs, and we incorporated lean manufacturing principles into our operations. We are looking to the SGP program to tap into a network of “like-minded” printers to help identify and incorporate new ideas and areas for continual improvement. The SGP also provides a formal and independent recogni- tion of our efforts and successes in this area. As the concept of sustainability continues to grow it is becoming more important that we demonstrate to our employees, custom- ers and other stakeholders our commitment to sustainability. Customers seeking to expand their own supply chains will find that we are already recognized for our sustainability efforts and therefore better positioned to bring more value to our customer-supplier relationship. www. f le xomag.com Q: Q: What was Global’s EHS policy like before the efforts to be SGP certified? Donohue: Our program is more comprehensive now, while maintaining the integrity of our original procedures and practices. While the original focus was compliance, now our program is more comprehensive and holistic, involving employees at all levels of the organization. We focus on the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle while producing the best quality product as quickly and efficiently as possible. Does Global have any other EHS certifications (i.e. ISO 14000, FSC, SFI, LEEDS, etc.)? Donohue:We do not. We have used some of the ISO concepts to develop good manufacturing processes, stan- dard operating procedures and programs. We have used AIB information to improve sanitation and other criteria as we produce food and personal care product packaging. Those existing elements helped us establish a baseline and deter- mine where to grow. We have joined other organizations, such as the Sustainable Business Network here in Philadelphia, to learn from other sustainable businesses and open avenues for our company.
