SPRING/SUMMER 2009/Vol. 2, No. 2 A GREEN PRINTING RESOURCE 3 Forum & 6 Global: 10 Flexo Ink EEA AN EXCLUSIVE ONLINE SUPPLEMENT TO FLEXO MAGAZINE PUBLISHED QUARTERLY BY Sustainability Certified Green First & Green Global Packaging on Being SGP Certifi ed Printer by the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership, of which FTA is a Founding Partner, comes after an optional trial period (certifi cation pending verifi cation, or CPV, status) and compliance with detailed criteria, including the establishment of a sustainability team, the implementation of a management system, the use of SGP program metrics, taking specifi c steps to reduce the facility’s environmental footprint, implementing pollution prevention activities, and committing to fundamental social and ethical norms. To date, a half-dozen FTA members are currently enrolled as CPV (see FLEXO March, page 58), but only Global Packaging has the honor of being fi rst out of the gate. To celebrate this long-time member’s achievement, FLEXO sat with Michelle Donohue, vice president of administration, and I 38 FLEXO JULY 2009 n March, FTA announced Global Packaging, Oaks, PA, as its fi rst member—and the fi rst fl exographic printer/converter—to achieve SGP Printer status. Certifi cation as an SGP discussed the process, the expected and unexpected results, as well as future plans. Q: When did Global fi rst decide it wanted to be SGP certifi ed? Who drove that decision? Donohue: We began hearing of the SGP partnership at the 2008 NEHS conference and at local Philadelphia-area sustainability conferences. Customers have asked us to formally state our sustainability or environmental, safety and quality programs for years. The drive has been from customers, sales, customer service, administration and manufacturing. We researched other options with other certifying bodies and determined SGP is best for our business model. SGP encompasses the entire organization, every type of printing, and therefore helps us better achieve our continual improvement goals. www. f le xography. org
