Home Living : July 28th 2009
6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, July 28, 2009 Fire education New research has revealed a third of NSW children would not know what to do in a home fire. The research was released as Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan officially launched a three-year Major Community Partnership between the NSW Fire Brigades and GIO. GIO representative John Rogers said fire danger was a real risk for NSW families and preparation was key to avoiding a disaster. ''House fires in NSW most commonly start in the kitchen, with cooking the leading cause, so it is concerning to learn that almost 10 per cent of parents allow their children to cook unsupervised,'' he said. GIOs research shows one-in-four NSW residents have experienced a home fire. In fact, 41 per cent of NSW residents said they had a fire escape plan in place. NSW Fire Brigades works non-stop to educate the community about fire safety through campaigns highlighting the risk of fires in the home and the crucial need for families to have smoke alarms and home escape plans. Already in place is its pre-school program delivering simple fire safety messages to three- to five-year-olds and its primary school program to teach children in infants grades about fire prevention and safety. NSWFB deputy commissioner Ken Thompson said families should develop a home fire escape plan. More information on kitchen fire safety can be found at www.fire.nsw.gov.au Precise victory PPP Precise and Punctual Painting and Decorating won an Award for Excellence at the Master Painters Association annual event recently. The Master Painters awards have seen some talented crafts- men pick up awards for their works through- out NSW. One project, at the heritage- listed Albion Place Hotel building, was a challenge for the painters and owners because it was necessary to maintain the heritage feel while giving it a modern edge. The project involved repainting three levels within the hotel, which involved expertise in several areas such as specialty ceilings, wallpaper and restoration of timber surfaces. The judges chose PPP Professional, Precise and Punctual Painting & Decorating as the outright winner in their category. This year they were up against record entries from throughout the state. .................................................
