An In-the-Round Challenge WWLC TO SUPPLIERS: READY WHEN YOU ARE! The time is now! The benefi ts are understood. The interest is out there. That’s what members of FTA’s Wide Web Leadership Council (WWLC) are saying about in-the-round (ITR) platemaking tech- nology. The WWLC consists of industry volunteers representing active FTA-member wide web fl exographic printing/converting companies. Since mid-2008, the Council has established a goal of exploring ITR technology to try to fi nd a cost-effective solution for implementation. A number of Council members commercially use ITR plates, some frequently, others only for specifi c applications. Now the time has come for suppliers to step up. The WWLC formally issued a challenge to manufacturers of ITR plates and imaging equipment, as well as supporting prepress providers: Build a program for wide web printers/converters to minimize initial investment and long-term costs associated with adopting this technology. This program should include the following information: • Who each sleeve supplier will be partnering with for ITR graphics, or vice versa. • A description of the sleeve stocking programs. For example, will the supplier stock most 10 pitch and 1/4 pitch sleeve repeats for standard press widths for all major press manufacturers? If not, what is the expected timeline to get sleeves? • Expected turnaround time from fi nal art fi le provided to ITR prepress provider to delivery of fi nished print sleeves. The WWLC has asked that representatives from each company join FTA’s Supplier Leadership Council or Prepress Leadership Council (depending on which is applicable) and, with support from those respective councils, start a joint project with the Wide Web Leadership Council. Those interested in answering the challenge may contact Council Leader John Paine, C-P Flexible Packaging (firstname.lastname@example.org) or FTA Staff Liaison Christian Bonawandt (cbonawandt@fl exography.org). 14 FLEXO AUGUST 2009 www.flexography.org
