Doing more with less: making the move from conventional to Digital printing By Vince Pentella national Business Manager Hewlett-Packard, HP indigo laBels & Packaging in the current economic climate, “lean manufacturing” has become the buzzword of the day, and businesses everywhere are challenged to figure out how to do more with less. we all know what that means, but the real question is, how do you grow your company’s sales while cutting costs at the same time? The digital advantage consider the advantages of digital printing. competition is heating up in the consumer marketplace, fueling demand for more products and skUs with standout packaging. at the same time, the number of requests for more frequent, shorter runs is on the rise. customers don’t want inventory. they don’t want obsolescence. they want seamless integration into their supply chain. and they’d rather not pay more for these services. what can you do to differentiate your company so that clients know you’re not the same as every other printer? Your most responsive, productive and cost-effective solution is digital, hands-down. the opportunity for growth in digital production is tremendous. By 2011, it is estimated that 10 percent of existing revenue in the pressure sensitive label market in the U.s. will convert from conventional production to digital. this translates to more than $250 million in incremental, potential annual revenue. that number will only increase with every passing year—and that’s without taking into account the increasing opportunities for new digital revenue. Be prepared to tap into your share of this revenue using the latest in digital technology. with the hp indigo ws6000 Digital press, companies can experience higher levels of productivity, and that’s what doing more with less is about. Unlike conventional printing, which typically involves a time-consuming process of make-ready, setup and platemaking, digital printing offers significantly shorter lead times. it’s also easy to operate, offering faster throughput with minimal operator intervention. saving time while increasing productivity all adds up to more profit. During a recent live demonstration of the hp indigo ws6000 Digital press, more than a half million labels (31,322 linear feet) were produced by one operator in less than one shift (5 hours, 48 minutes). Using one ws6000 hp indigo press, the operator printed 23 skUs from seven jobs, using five different substrates from wausau and fasson, which included Bopp, high gloss ps, semi gloss, estate 8 and metalized ps. the labels were also converted in the same shift in a parallel process.
