Energy Australia’s energy efficiency expert Paul Myors saysmanyalso said they overheated to the point where roomsbecomehot and stuffy. ‘‘Efficient heating is about being comfortable at minimum cost,’’ Mr Myors said. ‘‘The first important step is to choose the right heater. Portable electric heaters have the advantage of low purchase costs, but the disadvantage that they are expensive to run. Other more efficient options, such as gas heaters or reverse-cycle airconditioners, are more cost-effective." He says an interesting finding from Energy Australia’s research was that only around half of all homes with gas use it as the main form of heating. ‘‘Gas is more efficient (and) has lower greenhouse emissions,,’’ Mr Myors said. Therecommendedroom temperature in winter is 18-21˚C. For every degree you heat above 21˚C, you’re adding around 10 per cent to your costs. Foratypical all-electric home, heating by 3˚C over therecommendedrange can increase winter bills by more than $100, and push up greenhouse emissions by almost halfatonne.’’ The research also showed that: ❏63 per cent of households overheat their homes to the point where the roomsbecomehot and stuffy; ❏50 per cent of households never adjust temperature settings on heaters; ❏43 per cent always close doors to heat the main living area; and ❏Onlyathird, 35 per cent, of people dress warmly before turning heaters on.
