and Implementing FIRST What happens: FIRST says, Communication is the foundation of FIRST. Using agreed upon terminology and a defi ned workfl ow,FIRST seeks to minimize miscommunication and promote the manufacturing of consistent, conforming fl exographic materials. The role of the customer is crucial to the communication and implemen- tation of specifi cations. The customer determines the requirements and establishes the objectives for each job. Printers and suppliers help the customer achieve their quality and cost containment goals within the given timeframe. Each member of the supply chain must utilize process control methodologies if the fi nal product is going to conform to the quality and cost goals established by the customer. TEST says, This section does an outstanding job of identifying the big picture of communication between the customer’s expectations, supplier commitment and the printer’s capabilities by identifying the pack- age/product development team. But let’s not overlook the obvious! Each one of these team members has the obligation to communicate this to his or her internal teams to close the gap. Example: if the pressroom goes through the process of optimization then characterization and we com- municate this data back to the package/product development team, we have now set an expectation within our production environment. Ah, yes, but this all took place on the day shift! What about the people that work on the off shifts? Do they have a clear understanding of what is expected? TEST recommends creating internal teams that distribute these workfl ow expectations to all of the production personal. For more information, see Section 1.0 (page 2) of FIRST 4.0. The Keys to Flexographic Excellence What is FIRST The intention of FIRST is to provide all participants in the fl exographic reproduction process with a common set of guidelines, tutorials and data that can be used as communication and production tools. The aim of FIRST is to create a common set of specifi cations and commu- nication protocols for the industry. This platform should establish common communication and identify the responsibility of the provider(s). To order FIRST, call 631-737-6020 or visit www.ftastore.com. What is TEST TEST is the educational arm of the Flexographic Technical Association. The aim of TEST is to align all of the training materials available through the FTA with the guidelines, tutorials and data identifi ed in FIRST. TEST is focused on implementing new learning methodologies to reach out to a larger portion of the FTA membership. For more information on TEST, visit www.fl exography.org.
