Home Living : September 8th 2009
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, September 8, 2009 Maintain your paint HOMELIVING Paint & decorate Tony Isgrove Painter, decorator, and president of the Master Painters Association Unfortunately, no paint job will last forever. Mould, grime, soiling, finger marks and grease are just a few things thatcan build up on paint films. Not only can they be unsightly, but, if not cleaned regularly, they will eventually break down the paintwork, although with careful maintenance, the breakdown process can be slowed. Washing of external areasregularly with sugarsoap, bleach or detergent can all be used to clean the trim work of your home. High-pressure washing with a Gerni-typemachine can also be used to wash broadwall areas. The process of washing involves: Coveringplants, furniture and surroundingareas; Applyingasix-to-one water bleach to mould-affected areas with a spongeor garden sprayer; Rinsingafter 15 minutes; then Washing chalky areas with a mild detergent or sugarsoap. Always wear eye protection, gloves and a mask, and avoid wash-off going into stormwater drains. Internal paint areasmay require washing from time to time. Mould in dampareas such asbathrooms canbewashed down with bleach solution (three to one) and rinsed afterwards. Greasy areascan also be washed with sugarsoap or mild detergents. Avoid cleaningpaintwork for atleast four weeks after application. This allows the film to harden and cure. Poor quality paint won't respond to cleaningas well as apremium product. Regularwashingand checking of paintwork for peeling, rust, rot and cracking defects will ensure aprolonged life of the paintwork and thus save your hard-earned dollars.
