HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, September 8, 2009 11 Take the plunge HOMELIVING Heating your pool can give you year- round swimming and maximise your investment. But EnergyAustralia's energy-efficiency expert, Paul Myors, says pool heating can also be energy-intensive, so it's important to maximise efficiency to manage running costs and minimise the greenhouse gas emissions. There are three main types of pool heaters: solar, gas and heat pump. Solar pool-heating can extend the swimming season by up to four months. It works by circulating water through solar collectors, usually located on the roof of the house. Solar is, by far, the least greenhouse intensive and cheapest option to heat your pool, typically costing less than $200 a year to run, Mr Myors says. Gas heating can provide year-round swimming. It has a fast response time and relatively low greenhouse emissions. Running costs, however, can be more than $200 a month, depending on the pool size and usage patterns, Mr Myors says. It's important to select the right-size gas heater, which depends on the size of pool and whether a spa is to be heated as well. Gas boosting of a solar-heating system can provide cost-effective, year-round heating. Heat pumps are a very efficient form of electric heating which can provide year-round swimming, Mr Myors says. It's generally more costly to install than gas heating, but less expensive to run. Costs can be reduced further by switching to a time-based tariff using smart meters. A pool blanket alone can reduce heat loss and costs by up to 50 per cent and increase the water temperature by as much as 6˚C to 8˚C.
