Gadgets have come about through necessity as home-based cooks try more sophisticated recipes. The variety of cuisines sees families dine on fare created throughout the world as ingredients are readily available at specialist supermarkets. Tongs for holding the shell of escargots (snails) and snail forks (for extracting the meat) have been around for years. Snails have been enjoyed since prehistoric times. Of course, you must use the right snails -- the garden variety just won't do. A more practical gadget is a zester, which will shave the rind off citrus fruit, much better than attempting this with a knife. There are many ways to cut garlic, core an apple and keep an avocado fresh after it is cut. You can spend a lot of time in kitchenware stores discovering easy ways of slicing and dicing, mixing and keeping.
