HLW-HOMELIVING:WEST,Tuesday,September15,20093............................................... Skylights ideal for older homes RENOVATING an older house can be a balance of retaining the original charm of the building and incorporating a modern approach by using space and light. It is possible to achieve this balance using modern techniques, such as skylights, to bring natural light into an older home. Tony Campanella bought his 1940s bungalow 16 years ago and has gradually renovated and adapted it to suit his family. Typical of the period, the house had little natural light, which Mr Campanella overcame by installing five Skydome skylights. ‘‘I installed large skylights in the kitchen and living areas to bring in more natural light. We put another one in an enclosed side walkway and also a vented skylight in the main bathroom to improve light and airflow. We also converted the attic into a bedroom and installed a Skywindow. Skydome managing director Michael Bonello said even though skylights were a relatively modern building technology, they could still blend in with older architectural styles. ‘‘Using decorative finishes and diffusers, it is possible to match a skylight to an older-style home. Our Renaissance series has been popular with owners of older-style houses as it has a design that tends to suit both modern and older homes,’’ he said. Visit skydome.com.au or call 131 424. HOMELIVING ●● ●● Cool covering » ADVERTISING FEATURE Awnings protect a home from heat and cold, and, with 19 years in the business, Carbolite can manufacture a poly- carbonate awning to suit most areas. Carbolite managing director David Everett says the polycarbonate awnings are ideal for windows, patios, carports and other areas that need an awning. Awnings are available in DIY kits with all instructions and plans, or specialised installers will quote on-site for those who would prefer the professional approach. Mr Everett says polycarbonate has many great properties. ‘‘It allows light to enter the house yet keeps out the heat, it is fully waterproof and doesn’t crack or fade, and is an ideal lightweight alternative to glass,’’ he said. ‘‘T he polycarbonate is sourced using GE (General Electric) and Bayer resin, an extremely reliable product. ’’ All frames for the polycarbonate are powdercoated using aluminium. While window awnings are perfect for covering doors and windows and letting in light, patios can be covered in solar-protected sheets to reduce heat.
