Home' Jeep Action Sample : October 2009 Contents night. The next day they arrived at Isisford and made contact
with Jim Markwell. His yard was full of earthmoving machinery
and Jeeps. The J20 had been purchased new by Jim and had
served him well as a reliable work vehicle for nearly 25 years.
It was still in good mechanical condition but the body showed
signs of the work it had done.
This Jeep has a bit of history to it and is connected to an
article I did way back in February 2005. Jeep Australia had an
AM 720 that had been shipped in from the States. It was shown
to the military and affectionately dubbed "Big Bertha" by Jeep
Australia staff. “Big Bertha” was burnt in the fre that occurred in
Jeep Australia's factory in 1983.
Jim told us that the chassis and rear tub on his J20 were
from “Big Bertha”, the AM 720 destroyed in the fre. The J20
originally had a bench seat which Jim swapped out for a pair of
low back bucket seats. Jim's work over the years required long
distance travel carrying tools and kit, a job the J20 and J10 had
done well. Jim showed the travellers around his other Jeeps, the
J10, a Forward Control and J truck which had been set up as a fre
The J20 style-side and Wrangler headed east for the trip home
and wherever they stopped for fuel or food created plenty of
interest. People were interested to see a JK Wrangler, asking about
fuel economy and how it drove or wanted to know where the big
Jeep ute came from. The J20 performed well on the way home with
only the radiator cap failing a couple of hours from home.
Jim has already removed the carpet, cleaned the interior and
removed some dents. Olive Drab coloured paint from it's AM720
days can be seen on the under side of the ute back and a couple of
heavy duty military bash plates came with the Jeep. About a dozen
J20s left the Jeep Australia facility wearing a ute back making them
quite rare, so plans are to keep this Jeep fairly standard.
