Home Living : October 6th 2009
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 6, 2009 7 Ideas that wash » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Inventor Mark Flanagan has found a solution to reduce domestic water usage by almost 63 per cent. His Rainmax systems, available through Everhard, are stocked at plumbing and hardware outlets across the country. Rainmax Rainwater Harvesting System is a two-part invention. RAINIQ is designed to maximise rainwater collection and H2DUO is designed to provide easy access to tank water without expensive additional plumbing. The system was featured on the ABC New Inventors program last year. A University of Newcastle survey completed in July found the system effectively increased rainwater yield, providing a greater performance than by increasing the size of the rainwater tank. Results also highlighted that the two systems, fitted to a 1000-litre tank, provided considerably higher rainwater yield (for all water demand scenarios) than a 10,000-litre tank, without the systems. The two systems were initially installed at Mr Flanagan's house, allowing him to use his entire roof for rainwater catchment. Mr Flanagan is excited to launch the product in the Australian retail market. ''It doesn't matter if we are currently in drought or not, we need to be prepared and the RAINIQ and H2DUO systems are a cost-effective measure for everyday families,'' he said. ............................................... Saving through solar » ADVERTISING FEATURE Installing solar panels on the roof to collect energy from the sun is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to produce electricity. According to EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors, by installing a typical 1.5kW solar system the average home can save more than $600 a year on energy bills and reduce household greenhouse emissions by about two tonnes annually. The cost of rooftop solar systems has fallen significantly in the last 12 months, and is reduced even further by government rebates. The previous rebate of up to $8000 has been replaced with a solar credits scheme, which is no longer means-tested. The value of a credit can be up to $7000 for a 1.5kW system. Ask your solar system supplier for details. A system of this size will produce more than 25 per cent of the electricity needs of an average home. But because solar produces most energy in the middle of the day, when energy consumption is low in most homes, some of this energy is typically exported back to the grid. The good news is that from January 1, 2010, the NSW Government is introducing legislation for a feed-in tariff. This means your electricity retailer will buy back your solar power excess at 60c per kilowatt hour.
