HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 27, 2009 5 Household tips for big savings » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING How can a household make a difference in the running of the home to save on resources and money? Reducing energy consumption in the house is two-fold -- sustaining the environment and saving money. With the increasing price of electricity, water and gas, it makes financial sense to make households more efficient. The three key areas to focus on are thermal, energy and water. Hardware & General, in conjunction with the federal government's green loan program, is offering homeowners a free home green check by an independent assessor. The assessor will walk through the home and look at ways the household can save water, energy and money, based on individual lifestyles. The green loans program is helping households make the right choices for their home and budget by funding free home-sustainability assessments and interest-free loans to make the recommended improvements. There are various ways to increase a home's efficiency, from cost-free behavioural changes brought about by awareness and habit-changing, simple cheap retrofits, all the way up to big- ticket items such as solar water, solar electricity, rainwater tanks, grey water, insulation, external shades and curtains. Thermal efficiency is something that most homes have an issue with and one of the reasons the government is offering insulation rebates. Homeowners often miss simple, low-cost ways of making their home thermally efficient, such as draft-proofing. This can make enormous improvements. Energy-efficiency in the home is a great way of saving money and helping the environment. In NSW, electricity and gas prices have increased by 20 per cent and will keep increasing. The simplest way to combat this is to reduce usage, including the use of stand-by or phantom loads, which can contribute up to 20 per cent of a household's electricity bill. Fixing the seals or replacing old fridges can also alleviate massive energy losses. Replacing electric hot-water systems has also been heavily rebated by governments. Water is another precious commodity. It is very simple to save water within the home by changing behaviour in showers and baths, and fix running and leaking taps. These and other devices like toilets can also be retro-fitted or replaced with far more water-efficient models. Grey-water systems and rainwater tanks can also greatly reduce water costs. All these products are available at Hardware & General .
