The concept that sustainable profit- ability though a sustainable competitive advantage is the key to success of any sustainability initiative. We strongly recommend a waste audit as a first step to render the most holistic informa- tion concerning your process. This audit will also allow you to communicate with retailers and CPCs in the language that is common to the sustainability managers that will be interested in your products. Coinciding with the audit, individual elements within the overall process should be investigated as they pertain to the technologies discussed here. In this manner you will be able to take advantage of the sales, profitability and sustainability that they represent. The recently released In-Plant EHS Self-Assessment for Flexographic Printers was developed at the request of FTA members going through the SGP Printer certification process. Printing facilities can be certified by the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) PartnershipSM as SGP Printers by meeting criteria developed by a comprehensive stakeholder group representing printers, suppliers, consumer products companies, government agencies, non-government organizations and associations. SGP Printer certification is the only holistic recognition program for the printing industry available in the U.S. and Canada for all processes. SGP goes beyond substrate and ink use; and incorporates business practices that provide environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility, including protection of employee health and safety through the efficient use of renewable resources, energy and recycling. The Self-Assessment is used as a tool to verify a company 's EHS status and identify areas to improve. The document was designed to be used over and over to track progress and help companies continue on their sustainability journey.
